The name Moby Dick will remind most people of the white sperm whale from the novel of the same name by the American Herman Melville, but divers from the Rotterdam area tend to associate Moby Dick with the Moby Dick diving center on Melbournestraat and the pleasant diving association Moby Divers.
More than 26 years ago Tony became active in the diving world. He started the Moby Dick Diving Center. After years of working from Schouwen-Duiveland, the location has been Rotterdam for some time now. It is not only a true paradise for sports divers, but also the professionals have found the store. In addition, Tony, along with his crew, provides regular assistance to advertisers and film producers at home and abroad on their water-related scenes.
The diving virus was persistent and the Moby Divers diving club was created next to the diving center. Boat dives, barbecues, frikadell dives, ‘oliebollen’ dives, Easter dives, New Year dives, diving trips, diving weekends and all kinds of other diving related activities have happened over the years. Nothing is too crazy! No, the association can even make use of a serious large boat, the Vierlingh, a fast rib boat and an old fire truck that can be bombed into a true snack bar.
Of course, a serious and safe dive is always paramount, but around the dive there is a lot of fun and often the inner person will be satisfied.
Something humorous appears on Facebook with some regularity. An artwork by a diving fin taped to the wall that is inspired by the expensive banana artwork that was recently in the news. Cosmo the dog that shows a lot of interest and likes to come along. Tony showing his pink laces with a wheelbarrow, hair band or pants. Loyal members who provide maintenance or repair of the Vierlingh or pictures of film activities. Nowadays messages sometimes appear to promote the B&B Klaas Vaak that Jeanette, the wife of Tony started running in 2019. Yes, this family still had time to spare!
Members of the diving club thought it was high time that Tony was allowed to be in the spotlight for all his efforts for the club. This happened at the recently held New Year’s meeting of the association.
Normally the chairman, Tony, therefore, pays attention to people who have made extra credit for club activities in the past year, but this year it did not stop there. Just when Tony had started his New year’s speech, he was interrupted by Harold from Euro-divers Lanzarote. He was one of the core members of the club until his emigration and knows Tony better than anyone. Enough material for a nice speech. It seemed as though Tony, now that he had lost control and got himself at the center in some other way, felt a bit uncomfortable. That adorns this man!
Thanks Tony!
