We would like to emphasize that a virus does not always have to be negative and sickening. We are suffering from an innocuous but incurable virus, namely the Disney virus, and that infected us a long time ago. Pandering to the virus is good for the head and leads to relaxation and a lot of joy. Also, a holiday destination is easy to determine, although if you do not pay attention, your wallet can get pretty sick.
“How did it come about?” you’d think.
When I was a little girl, my mother regularly bought the weekly Donald Duck magazine. My father put me on his lap and together we enjoyed every page of it. Dad read to me; I looked intently at the accompanying pictures and together we had the greatest fun. We followed this procedure exactly the same way with Disneyland magazine. Once I could read myself, I reread all those preserved magazines countless times. Over the years, all other magazines have long since been somehow discarded, but the Disney reading is still within reach and won’t go for gold. I used to enjoy watching cartoons and plush stuffed animals were also a favorite.
The male half of our duo was also introduced to the Donald Duck magazine by his parents. Later, on one of the then scarce television channels, the Disney Club was broadcast and he did not skip one episode of it. Favorite parts were the reports from Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
During his first holiday by plane in 1991 he visited Walt Disney World in a nutshell and was completely sold. Led by a guide, they were led in a high pace as a group through the Magic Kingdom and Epcot and did some of the top attractions. Shortly afterwards Euro Disney (now: Disneyland Paris) opened its doors and of course he was there almost instantly. In the opening year of 1992 he has been there many times.
In the meantime, we regularly met again in college. At the end of the academic year, we were excited by his enthusiasm and we went to Euro Disney for a few days. We were amazed by the amount of detail and the beauty of the park. We stayed for three nights at Hotel Sequoia Lodge and from early in the morning until midnight we immersed ourselves in the fairytale Disney atmosphere.
Not much later he asked “Would you like to go to Florida next year together with me?” and that was actually the most crucial question to date. You will understand, we have indeed started that journey and have been inseparable ever since. The Mickey pendant I got from him for my birthday between that question and the actual trip still shines around my neck.
All the years we have lived together under one roof, we are a member of the weekly Donald Duck. We owned Euro Disney shares until they were bought up by the Walt Disney Company. We visit the parks and Salon Mickey in Paris regularly and we have also seen the American parks on the east and west coast.
We search for information and news from various (internet) sources. Our most recent achievement is that we have registered as Donalteur of the only Dutch-language Disney podcast D-Tales. Recently the three men again made a great broadcast with the Dutch pianist Gijs of the Disneyland Hotel in Paris, which finally convinced us to support this podcast.
Over the years we have collected quite some souvenirs from our trips. Even pajamas with Goofy and Mickey are in the wardrobe and we eat kale from a Mickey plate. The most recent purchase during a weekend in Groningen is a booklet from the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg, where a few Disney Cruise ships have been launched over the years.
We hope to visit a park again soon. Of course we are also curious about the Asian parks, but that will have to wait a while given the developments regarding the less innocent virus that now dominates the globe.
